The Joke’s On Us

April 29, 2012

Like him or hate him (and I think you know where I stand on this), Barack Obama is smooth, polished and … with the right script, actually pretty funny.  He demonstrated that last night at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner (and you can see it here:  http://conservativebyte.com/2012/04/eating-dog-and-born-in-hawaii-jokes-on-you-america/).

He made all the expected jokes, about all the expected topics.  His birth certificate.  Bo and Shamus.  Michelle and Ann.  Newt and Mitt. Hillary and the Secret Service. Rappers and Hollywood and how cool he really is.  He’s supposed to be self-deprecating, and he was.  He’s supposed to be smooth, polished and funny, and he was.  However, he also demonstrated an annoying trait which I think has significance … he laughed at all of his own jokes (and he’s got a really annoying laugh).

I guess there’s no harm done in the President participating in this annual event, but coming on the heels of Obama’s week-long blitz of the late night talk shows, I wonder if he’s running for President or auditioning for the Comic-in-Chief.  We’ve got wars and rumors of war.  We’ve got an economy that seems to be dipping down for a second wave of recession.  We’ve got people who are running out of unemployment benefits, with no hope for a meaningful job.  We’ve got record foreclosures and skyrocketing bankruptcies.  The image of Nero comes to mind – it seems, between golf, vacations and late-night joke-fests, Obama is fiddling around while our latter-day Rome burns.

I don’t want to make too much of this.  But I also think it’s time for a President who’s ready to lead, instead of ready to campaign.

In 1992, we elected a President who, at the time, seemed to be always campaigning for that next election.  Clinton was criticized for being in non-stop war-room campaign mode, and rightly so.  But he’s a piker compared to Obama, who’s only leadership has been to issue a flurry of imperial Executive Orders while, instead of working with Congress, he’s out in the hustings (whatever they are), campaigning non-stop.  And at every campaign appearance, he offers a new group something else for free (most recently, free college loans to all students – hey, what’s another trillion-dollar debt, right?).  He laughs, Rome burns, and all we can do is hope that America will elect an adult to the office of President.
