Santorum Just Saved Romney … in November

April 10, 2012

By acknowledging the inevitable and bowing out now (perhaps before an embarrassing loss in home-state Pennsylvania, certainly before a decisive loss in Tampa), Rich Santorum may have done more to defeat Barack Obama and ensure the victory of Mitt Romney than most people would be willing to believe.

For example – Romney was planning to invest a reported $7 million dollars fighting Santorum in California – a state no Republican can hope to win in November, but one that’s critical for the nomination. All that name recognition would be wasted (in November), and that money – while ultimately a drop in the bucket – could be decisive right now.

And what applies in California also applies in the twenty or so remaining states, each of which had the potential to become an expensive R vs. R battleground. Now, instead of fighting for every delegate, Romney can sail into Tampa and reserve his campaign dollars for the decisive fight against Obama. At teh same time, most of the money that would have gone to Santorum will be wisely invested in a November victory – not all of it, to be sure, but with the risk of Four More Years, every dollar is critical.

President Obama has been talking for more than a year about his billion-dollar re-election war chest – and while raising that money has proved to be a bit more difficult than he had counted on, he’s still going to have a lot of union money, and corrupt off-shore Gulf-Arab credit card donations (as he had in 2008) and Hollywood largesse. And he’s already started attacking Romney in ads and speeches. If Mitt had to continue to fight against other Republicans, those Obama attacks could have remain largely unchallenged. Now, thanks to Santorum, Mitt will have the time, focus and resources to not only defend himself, but to carry the Good Fight to Obama.

That could prove decisive on the First Tuesday after the First Monday in November.

Thank you, Rick Santorum, for courageously helping the party to defeat President Obama seven months from now.
