Put an End to Those Rumors – I’m Not A Paulista

April 16, 2012

This blog is a bit more personal than usual – I request your indulgence while I get something off my chest.

Those who know me know that I am an ardent lower-case-“L” libertarian.

I believe that we need a strong national defense, so that we can make sure that other countries (including terror “countries”) leave us the hell alone, too.

I believe that taxes are nothing short of legally-sanctioned armed robbery (try not paying your taxes and see who comes to your door to collect – and notice what is located in that holster on his hip).  This means, among other things, that government has a moral obligation to use only that level of taxation that it needs to perform the basic functions that only it can provide – which means no NEA, no NHS, no government studies of the mating habits of Alabama muskrats (sorry, Alabama), no nothing beyond military and police, coinage and certain other basic functions that only the government can provide.

All of those things are things that capital “L” Libertarians – as well as Paulistas who still pretend to be part of the Republican Party (but who secretly hope to overthrow the party and make it their own) – believe in.

But I draw the line there.

For instance,, I also believe that the government which governs best … governs someone else, and leaves me the hell alone. Which means I cannot abide by Ron Paul’s go-along-to-get-along, leave-them-alone-and-they’ll-leave-us-alone foreign policy.  I’m more a “nuke ‘em till they glow in the dark then … ahem … “spit” on the ashes kind of guy, who believes we need a strong military and a strong foreign policy, one designed to scare all potential enemies into behaving civilly, the way Ronald Reagan gave us Pax Americana and the end to the Cold War.

In addition, I also believe that a core value of society involves protecting children from victimization – and protecting others from victimization as well – which means I’m not in favor of legalizing drugs and I’m not in favor of legalizing prostitution.  In fact, I spent the better part of fifteen years working with private-sector drug prevention and drug treatment organizations (including hospitals), and I also consulted for two years – pro bono – with the U.S. Drug Czar on a program to help keep kids off drugs.  And I’m working now with a private-sector client that has (among other programs) one to help teen prostitutes save themselves and get out of the “life” before it kills them.  So I have (and continue to) walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

Which brings me to the point of this blog post.  I believe there are some rumors going around that I am a Paulista – that I support (openly or secretly) Congressman Ron Paul.  While I have no issue with many of his financial and civil libertarian views, I strongly oppose his foreign policy (because I do not believe in the basic goodness – or even sanity – of Iran, North Korea, Chavez or Castro – and I also strongly oppose any notion of legalizing drugs or prostitution.  There are too many victims, too many innocents who need to be protected.

So, if you hear any rumors about me and Ron Paul, please keep this blog in mind.
