The Obama Campaign has adopted a new one-word slogan – “Forward” – that is far more telling than they probably intended it to be. This is the word that Wikipedia says is “generic for a socialist publication” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward_%28generic_name_of_socialist_publications%29). It’s the name of a publication founded by Marx, and one founded in 1905 by Lenin.
Forward has a rich history in the communist and socialist movements in the 1800s and 1900s, and remains today as the name of the chief publication produced by what’s left of the German Communist Party. This history goes back to the founding of the Communist movement in the mid-1800s, when it was used by Marx and Engels – the founders and philosophical Godfathers of Communism, the men who, with Lenin and Stalin, were the secular Gods of Communists the world over for 150 or more years.
According to the Washington Times (http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2012/apr/30/new-obama-slogan-has-long-ties-marxism-socialism/), the new slogan was unveiled just before May Day (the traditional Communist and Socialist annual holiday – hence the annual May Day Parades in Red Square/Moscow, and in other Communist-nation capitals through the world:
“The Obama campaign released its new campaign slogan Monday in a 7-minute video,” the Washington Times reported. “The title card has simply the word “Forward” with the “O” having the familiar Obama logo from 2008. It will be played at rallies this weekend that mark the Obama re-election campaign’s official beginning.”
While the Obama Administration and campaign are almost sure to rush “forward” to distance themselves from the radical connotations of the campaign’s new slogan (they may even drop it as a really, really bad idea), but as the Times pointed out, this will only reinforce Conservatives’ long-held beliefs that Obama has always maintained close ties to the radical fringe of the socialist movement.
“Conservative critics of the Obama administration have noted numerous ties to radicalism and socialists throughout Mr. Obama’s history,” The Times reported, “from his first political campaign being launched from the living room of two former Weather Underground members, to appointing as green jobs czar Van Jones, a self-described communist.”
What this tells me, as a long-time campaign consultant and student of “political marketing” (which I taught at the university level), the Obama people are so close to the radical left, and so intensely view that extreme as “normal,” that it never occurred to them that this new slogan was the ultimate campaign Freudian Slip.
