Mr. Newt Consistent to the Bitter End … and the Bitter End … and the Bitter End …

April 11, 2012

Newt Gingrich’s inconsistency is nothing if not consistent.

On Sunday, he was on one of the talking-head Sunday talk shows, where, in a very statesmanlike fashion, he allowed that Romney will, in all likelihood, be the Republican nominee (this a day before Rick Santorum’s departure from the race made that near-certainty into an absolute).  But moments after Santorum departed, Newt began crowing on the radio how he finally had a chance to go up against Romney one-on-one, even talking about a possible debate in North Carolina.

Which, if you think about it, is (as was so memorably said in the classic film True Grit, “I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man …”  Even after he quits, Newt just doesn’t know when to quit.  So it looks like he and the equally indomitable Ron Paul will stage a bitter contest to see who can not only come in last, but prove just how irrelevant he is to the electoral process, all the way to Tampa.
